COWLERSLEY residents are appealing to Kirklees Council for £19,200 to help revive the area's community centre.

The Cowlersley Tenants' and Residents' Association has applied to the council's Neighbourhood Renewal Fund for the cash.

The remaining £33,000 for the project will be found from other sources.

The association wants to use the money to bring the dilapidated centre into line with health and safety requirements, as well as paying for refurbishing it.

The association will use some of the cash to produce a business plan, policies and procedures for the centre and train members to run it.

The group aims to run a variety of activities from the centre, including coffee mornings, drop-in sessions, information technology courses and taster sessions, after-school activities and advice and training sessions on work and other issues.

Other possibilities include hosting councillors' and neighbourhood wardens' surgeries, putting on young people's activities, leasing the hall for private parties and hosting art events.
