A FUNDING boost of nearly £25,000 could be music to the ears of young people in Dalton.

Kirklees Council is stumping up £24,800 for a pilot project to get youngsters involved in extra-curricular music.

It will include music workshops run by community artists Mansamitra during Arts Week at the end of May and music sessions run by the council’s Young People’s Services.

The Dalton library and information centre will support the project by running rap poetry sessions.

The scheme will culminate with an X-Factor-style event with musical workshops on July 4.

Dalton ward councillor Rochelle Parchment, who is backing the project, said: “Music is an extremely positive activity for young people to be involved in.

“It has proven educational benefits and allows young people to develop a whole host of other important life skills such as patience, persistence, co-operation and teamwork.

“As a parent myself, this is exactly the sort of project that is needed if we are to get more young people involved in music.

“I am very glad that through my work with the council, the project is being piloted in the Dalton area.”
