CASH seized from criminals is being spent to protect homes against burglars.

Police in Kirklees are using money they get from the Proceeds of Crime Act to hand out electronic timers to people for free.

Ahead of the clocks going back on Sunday, October 30, police officers will hand out timers to people at various locations throughout the town.

Dewsbury Crime Prevention Officer, John Ellis, said: “A known burglar once pointed out that a hall or landing light was a ‘green light’ to him because nobody would sit in a dark house with just one of those lights on.

“These timers are free and will ensure houses appear occupied while keeping energy bills down.”

The free timers will be distributed on Friday, October 28, at: Dewsbury Police Station, Huddersfield Town Hall and at the following libraries: Batley, Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike, Mirfield, Almondbury, Deighton, Skelmanthorpe, Holmfirth.
