THIS was the dramatic moment a Huddersfield landmark was swathed in the Olympic colours.

Victoria Tower at Castle Hill joined in celebrations for the launch of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The landmark was lit up in the colours of the London Games at precisely 8.12pm – 20.12 – last night. Kirklees Council will illuminate the tower tonight and tomorrow night as well.

More than 600 Cultural Olympiad events will take place across the country this weekend to showcase British arts and culture in the run-up to the Olympics.

The council’s Cabinet member for leisure services, Clr Liz Smaje, said: “The Olympics are a wonderful way for the nation to come together and celebrate what is special about this country. We want to ensure that Kirklees residents join in these celebrations.”
