A HUDDERSFIELD credit union is about to sign up its 15,000th member as it moves to new premises.

Castle and Minster Credit Union has doubled its membership since the 2008 financial crisis.

The co-operative is moving from Upperhead Row to a new head office at Civic Centre 1 on High Street.

Kirklees Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan will cut the ribbon at the new HQ on Tuesday – before signing up as Castle and Minster’s 15,000th member.

He said: “The credit union is an important partner in helping the council tackle the problems that have arisen from the recession.

“By providing low-cost loans and a financial lifeline to families they have prevented many people entering onto a cycle of debt with doorstep lenders, paying extortionate interest rates.

“Castle and Minster has also demonstrated its commitment to encouraging responsible financial management, but where members have fallen into debt they can signpost those in need to debt advisory services. I am pleased and proud to become a member.”

Castle and Minster director Tony Hood added: “On behalf of the credit union, I would like to express my sincere thanks for the continued support we receive from Kirklees Council, which has helped us move into Civic Centre 1.”

Castle and Minster also has offices in Deighton, Marsden, Dewsbury and Batley.
