REVELLERS celebrated 20 years of independence in Ukraine.

Members of the Ukrainian community packed the Huddersfield Ukrainian Club, to celebrate the country’s freedom from Soviet rule.

The country gained independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

The deputy mayor of Kirklees, Clr Christine Iredale, attended the event at the club on Edgerton Road.

Stephen Komarnyckyj and Yehven Maldryk gave speeches.

And the event – compered by Michael Drapan – saw entertainment from the choir Vocal Expressions, folk singer Holly Czolacz and Trio Soloveyky.

Stephen Komarnyckyj said: “There were a lot of people there to celebrate 20 years of independence.

“The community in Huddersfield has been going for over 50 years now and everyone celebrated together.”

Mr Komarnyckyj’s father Michael Komarnyckyj came to Huddersfield in 1955 to work in the mills.

Mr Komarnyckyj said Ukraine had lost more people through genocide than any other country during the 20th century.
