NEW signs have been put up at 13 cemeteries, telling dog owners their pets must be kept on leads and should not foul the grounds.

Kirklees Council is warning that dog wardens will issue £50 on-the-spot fines.

If the case goes to court, the person in charge of the dog could be fined up to £1,000.

Stray dogs found in cemetery grounds will be seized and put in kennels.

If a dog is not claimed, or the expenses are not paid within seven days, efforts will be made to find a new home for the dog.

If this is not possible, the dog will be destroyed.

Clr Ann Denham, the council Cabinet member for the environment, said: "We collect about 600 stray dogs each year and many of these are found roaming around cemetery grounds.

"Letting your dog roam and, in particular, letting them foul the grounds on and around graves is irresponsible and thoughtless."
