A THRIVING community sports centre is opening its doors to more people.

The Deighton Arena is celebrating its third birthday next month by introducing a new membership scheme.

And a free induction session is being offered throughout the anniversary month, to encourage more people to try out what the centre has to offer.

Its supervisor, Beverley Henderson, said the centre, in Deighton Road, had almost 2,000 members.

It has established many health and fitness activities, which had been of value to local people.

But she said a new membership policy now aimed to attract people throughout Kirklees.

When the centre opened it gave reduced prices to people living in the area.

It is now used by groups including Heartline, Surestart and football, rugby, basketball and netball teams.

It is also home to the Deighton Into Sports Project, which introduces youngsters to sport.

The new policy will offer a membership category for working people in Kirklees.

Gold membership costs £11 per month and will be for local residents, students and anyone who lives outside the area and who is receiving benefits.

Silver membership will be open to anyone and cost £19.20 a month.

The centre is open between 9am and 10pm Monday to Thursday, 9am to 9pm on Fridays and 10am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.
