HUDDERSFIELD Sports Centre scooped two awards at the Kirkless Active Leisure celebration evening, at Colne Valley Leisure Centre in Slaithwaite.

The centre took the award for Most Improved Centre of the Year, due to their success despite staffing difficulties. It also received the Quest award - an industry award for excellence - as it has achieved its social objectives with 1.7% of its users registered as disabled.

Huddersfield's catering officer Sharon Bates won the Employee of the Year Award, while Scissett Baths' instructor Maureen Woodhouse took the David Dagg Memorial Trophy for the Spirit of KAL Award.

Seventeen-year-old Charlotte Messenger, who was nominated for the Huddersfield Examiner Community Awards for Young Personality of the Year, earned a special award.

She had taken part in a first aid course at Huddersfield Sports Centre, then had to use her newly acquired skills when a man collapsed at Huddersfield Bus Station.
