VOLUNTEERS are needed to keep an eye on Kirklees Council's decisions and activities.

Recruits are being sought to work alongside councillors and take part in overview and scrutiny work.

They will help to challenge the council's decision-makers, monitor services and review policy.

They will sit on one of seven scrutiny panels alongside councillors - culture and leisure, regeneration, environment, transport, social affairs and health, housing, and corporate and external affairs. They are also needed to sit on temporary panels set up to study specific issues, such as charges for the collection of bulky waste.

Panel members will attend meetings, read papers and reports, consider evidence and information provided at meetings and ask questions.

Clr Andrew Palfreeman, the council's overview and scrutiny chairman, said: "I want members of the public to make contributions to scrutiny by becoming panel members, sitting with the council- lors, and bringing their own experiences and opinions to the work we do."

* Call the overview and scrutiny office on 01484 221908, email scrutiny.office@kirklees.gov.uk or write to Overview and Scrutiny Office, Huddersfield Town, Ramsden Street, Huddersfield, HD1 2TA. The closing date is November 7.
