THEY'RE the superstars of the green baize.

And they are heading to Huddersfield.

Snooker champions Ronnie O'Sullivan, Stephen Hendry and John Virgo are bound for Huddersfield Sports Centre.

The Examiner is presenting the Legends of Snooker Challenge on Saturday, March 17.

And 850 snooker fans will get the chance to see hotshot O'Sullivan take on Hendry in a nine-frame challenge match, compered by Virgo.

Virgo, the master of the trick shot, will also be presenting an hour-long special on the night before the challenge match.

He'll go through his repertoire of tricks and also take on some local amateur players in a thrilling challenge.

It's a huge night for sport and snooker fans in Huddersfield and one of the biggest events at the Sports Centre in recent years.

Operations Manager James Ditchfield said: "We're delighted to have got stars of this calibre coming to Huddersfield.

"It promises to be a very special night.

"The main hall will be turned into a spectacular sporting arena for that night and with players of the calibre of Virgo, Hendry and O'Sullivan we are guaranteed some top-class action."

O'Sullivan, 31, is regarded as one of the geniuses of snooker, but also unpredictable.

He turned pro in 1992 and has become one of the top players in the world, capturing a string of titles.

Nicknamed The Rocket, O'Sullivan has long been regarded as one of snooker's most naturally gifted players.

He has the rare ability to play both left-handed and right-handed and has made six 147 breaks in tournaments.

Away from the table he is a big golf fan and names Tiger Woods as the sportsman he most admires.

He is also a keen footballer and has played in the Arsenal celebrity team and alongside Robbie Williams.

Hendry gives the impression of a dour Scotsman, but has been one of the true champions of snooker.

He was The Golden Boy of the 1990s, dominating the world after years in the shadow of Steve Davis.

Hendry, 38, turned pro in 1985 and has won every title in the sport.

He has earned more than £8m in prize money.

In 1994 he was awarded the MBE by the Queen for services to sport.

Charismatic John Virgo, born in Salford in 1946, took up snooker at 15.

Since then he has become one of the world's top players, but is now renowned for his showmanship at tournaments and exhibitions.

He became a TV star when he teamed up with comic Jim Davidson in the show Big Break and is now one of the game's best-known characters.
