COMMUTERS travelled to work on trains run by a new rail operator today.

Northern has taken responsibility for the networks previously run by Arriva Trains Northern and First North Western.

They include trains which stop at Huddersfield but not the Trans- Pennine Express service, which is run by First.

Northern will bring together 472 stations and 1,600 miles of track across a region stretching from Newcastle to Stoke for the first time.

Northern has been set up by Anglo-Dutch partners Seco-NedRailways, and its franchise will run for up to 8¾ years.
