SUPPORTERS of a Huddersfield road safety group are celebrating after being awarded nearly £40,000 in Government grants.

The Brake group has been handed £38,000 from the Road Safety Challenge Fund, which aims to improve safety on British roads.

Brake is a national road safety charity which aims to prevent death and injury on the roads through educating road users and campaigning for Government improvements to road safety.

And, as reported in the Examiner on Friday, Brake has set up a phone hotline which aims to name and shame killer roads. The number is 0800 068 7780.

The charity also cares for people who are bereaved or affected by serious injury in a crash.

It provides support services, including a helpline, and literature distributed through the police.

Of the £38,000, £10,000 will be spent on Road Safety Week action packs. These will help to pay for the creation of 13,000 action packs for teachers.

Some £10,675 will go on a leaflet aimed at 17 to 21- year-olds on the dangers of drug and drink driving.

The charity also received £17,468 to help with creating advice sheets aimed at vehicle fleet managers and drivers.

Transport minister David Jamieson MP said: "The

Road Safety Challenge Fund provides an excellent opportunity for us to help non-government organisations with schemes which complement our own programme of work to reduce casualties on the roads."
