A CHARITY fund, run by Yorkshire Building Society, has hit the £2m mark for donations to good causes.

The society, which has its roots in Huddersfield, has handed out the cash to more than 3,600 deserving organisations.

The first cheque from the Bradford-based society's charitable foundation was awarded in 1999.

Since then, the number and value of donations has increased year on year.

In 2005, 424 donations were made totalling £314,300. So far this year, more than 700 local charities and good causes have been supported.

Much of the cash comes from the society's Small Change Big Difference scheme - where members donate just pennies from the interest they receive on their accounts.

Society members are then invited by the foundation's trustees to recommend local charities and good causes to support.

Foundation spokes- woman Louise Neill said: "As the majority of the foundation's money is generated from Yorkshire Building Society members, we feel it is only right that they are invited to have their say in where it goes.

"We aim to support charities and good causes that are important to our staff and members, operating in areas where they live and work, with many of these being local causes that often get overlooked by larger organisations.

"Over 84% of donations this year have been as a result of a member nomination."
