A NEW centre offering lifelong care for adults with severe disabilities is expected to open in Holmfirth in April.

Rowan Court, run by charity the Hollybank Trust, will provide housing for 15 adults, aged as young as 20, for the rest of their lives.

And it will mean a bright new future for the residents, who could have ended up in old people’s homes.

Work on the £2.3m three-storey home, situated behind Holme Valley Memorial Hospital, is forecast to finish in February.

The state-of-the-art house includes en-suite bathrooms, in-house staff and special disabled facilities.

It will be funded by the charity and Kirklees Council.

Previously adults with profound disabilities would receive care at Willow Court, Mirfield, before moving to homes in the community.

The home, built by Holme Valley firm Conroy Brook, will be Holly Bank Trust’s sixth care home for adults. The Mirfield-based charity also runs Holly Bank School at Roe Head, Mirfield.

Chief executive Steven Hughes said: “It’s absolutely top of the range. It’s the best we’ve built.

“Young people aged 19 can leave special schools and end up in old people’s homes so we decided to commit to lifelong care.

“It will take a lot of weight off the parents and it’s a joy to behold.”
