A CHARITY is staging a concert in a cathedral as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.

Mirfield-based canal boat charity The Safe Anchor Trust will hold the concert in Wakefield Cathedral on Saturday, October 15.

It will start at 7pm and feature the West Yorkshire Police Band and Harrogate Ladies' College Choir.

The Safe Anchor Trust has provided trips on canal boats for 35,000 people since it was founded in 1995.

It is a registered charity which gives free access to the waterways on narrowboats for all age groups with special needs.

Hollywood and Star Trek actor, Patrick Stewart, who was born in Mirfield, is the trust's president.

The Safe Anchor Trust's chairman, Jane Gummer, said: "This is an important year for us.

"We have a fantastic band of volunteers who help out on a regular basis and we have all been busy fundraising to purchase a new broad-beamed boat with wheelchair access, disabled facilities and suitable classroom and conference capabilities.

"The new boat will allow us to improve and expand our services to a wide range of users, particularly physically disabled groups.

"We want to give as many people as possible an opportunity to enjoy our local waterways."

The trust works in partnership with the West Yorkshire Police, British Waterways and the Probation Service.

It works with the police to look at concerns involving young people, such as water safety, anti-social behaviour, damage, graffiti and volunteering.

Pc John Simpson, from West Yorkshire Police's community safety department, said: "The trust allows police officers to work with young people in a more informal way, allowing barriers to be broken down."

Tickets for the concert cost £5 and are available from the Customer Service Centre in The Ridings Shopping Centre in Wakefield, Wakefield Cathedral Shop, or by post from The Safe Anchor Trust Ltd, 18 Roberttown Lane, Liversedge, WF15 7LX.

Concert-goers can also pay on the door.
