MORE should be done to protect children, says a Huddersfield-based road safety charity.

Brake wants the Government to bring in compulsory 20mph zones outside schools and in residential areas.

General manager Sarah Fatica said: "It is unacceptable that a child is hurt on our roads every 16 minutes.

"Reducing speeds would go some way to cutting this horrific toll of death and injury.

"A child hit by a car doing 20mph has a 90% survival chance. At 30mph this falls to 50%."

The Government's Child Road Safety Strategy was published this week. It calls for councils and the Highways Agency to consider a wider use of 20mph zones.
