A CANCER charity is looking for local committee members.

Macmillan Cancer Relief wants new helpers for its Calderdale and Huddersfield fundraising appeal.

The appeal aims to improve services for cancer patients in this area.

Members chosen for the committee need good social or work contacts to drum up support and cash for the appeal.

Local fundraiser Rose Tipton said: "We need people with big influence socially or in business to open the door for fund- raisers.

"We have had the same committee for about 18 months.

"We are ready for some fresh blood and people who move in different circles to help us find new sources of support and income."

The current committee will be a hard act to follow after raising £500,000.

The cash has paid for two extra Macmillan nurses, one for the palliative care team and another for nursing homes.

The money has also allowed more people to get cancer care at home in Calderdale.

As well as that it has paid for a GP facilitator, who shares specialist cancer skills and knowledge with other health professionals.

The appeal committee's next goal is to raise £200,000 to pay for a specialist dietician for cancer patients.

Ms Tipton said: "Patients with cancer see dietary advice as a key to their wellbeing.

"There are no dedicated cancer specialist dieticians at the moment.

"Diet has a distinct impact on the quality of life for those living with cancer who do not have normal appetites or who have lost weight," she added.

The new dietician will work for patients in both Calderdale and Huddersfield.

Extra cash also need to be raised for Macmillan's patient grant scheme, which helps people suffering financial hardship.
