CALLS are being made in Huddersfield for all school governors to be given official vetting before they take up their roles.

British National Party councillor David Exley said he was surprised to learn there were no checks by the Criminal Records Bureau.

He added: "I'm a school governor and I learned about this at a course to help me in that role.

"One of the questions I asked was about checks by the CRB. It emerged from that conversation that school governors don't have to undergo a CRB check.

"It's a door that is possibly open to people who may want to use that route for their own particular means, whether it is getting through to young children or manipulating the school's finances."

Kirklees Council leaders said a review was under way on the manner in which checks are carried out in schools.

Clr Jim Dodds, Cabinet member responsible for children's services, said: "I just wanted to have a look at how schools are doing it and how we as a council are overseeing it and what records are kept.

"What happens when a teacher is transferred between schools?

"It's just a look at the whole thing."

Clr Dodds said he hoped the review would be completed sooner rather than later.
