CHECK your trees is the message to householders and landowners from council officials.

High winds over the weekend may have left some trees at greater risk of falling.

Calderdale's senior tree officer, Richard Robertshaw, said the countryside and forestry unit dealt with more than 50 calls over the weekend from people worried about fallen trees or trees thought to be dangerous.

"During a storm, trees should sway, but the ground near it should not move," he said.

"People should look round the base of the tree. If there are cracks in the ground from movement of the tree, contact us immediately."
