FIREFIGHTERS in Slaithwaite will be carrying out a safety blitz on 1,500 homes this October.

A specialist team of firefighters and community safety specialists will perform the free fire safety tests for nine months.

Staff have already started a programme of checks on 872 commercial and industrial premises in the area.

One of the key aims of the home safety checks will be to prioritise the over-60s and other people most at risk from fire, such as those with mobility problems.

Colne Valley councillor Gordon Beever, who was elected in June to chair West Yorkshire Fire Authority, said: "There is no doubt that the best way to reduce death and injury is by preventing fire from starting in the first place.

"That is why we want to be more pro-active in the way we deploy staff, to strike a better balance between prevention and traditional intervention."
