DRINKERS at the Huddersfield Oktoberfest voted for their favourite beer - and the result was a home win!

The Empire Brewery at Quarmby won Best Bitter and Beer of the Festival for Strikes Back.

The pale, golden bitter was a big hit with the drinkers, who managed to knock back two casks of it during the two days of the festival, which was held at the Irish Centre in Fitzwilliam Street on October 8 and 9.

But it was not just Empire Brewery that was flying the flag for Huddersfield real ale.

The Linthwaite-based John Eastwood Brewery came second in the bitter category with Eastwood's Best.

The Best Mild award went to Elland brewers Eastwood and Sanders for Born to be Mild. XX Mild, by Harvey's Brewery, of Lewes, Sussex, came second.

The festival, organised by the Huddersfield and district branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), featured more than 70 beers.

Over 4,500 pints were drunk over the two days.
