Fast food it wasn’t but it was all in a good cause.

Hundreds of hungry fried chicken fans queued for up to an hour to help celebrate a Huddersfield takeaway’s 30th anniversary.

Marstons Chicken Shop in Leeds Road, Bradley, turned 30 on Wednesday and all week portions of chicken legs and chips were just £1 over lunchtime.

And all the proceeds will be donated to Kirkwood Hospice.

The tasty special offer, which ends tomorrow, has seen long queues out of the door, into the car park and up Leeds Road.

The week started steadily enough but a story in the Examiner on Wednesday saw the shop inundated.

On Thursday the lunchtime queues didn’t look that long but big telephone orders from local firms meant the wait was up to an hour.

Hazel Dransfield, one of the partners, said: “It’s just been fantastic and I would like to thank our staff and customers for their hard work and patience.

“All the staff have been marvellous. We could only go as fast as the machines. It’s not an easy job!

“Some people had to wait an hour and we’ve had queues out up Leeds Road. We didn’t expect it to be so successful.”
