THE British Government sanctioned the shipping of about 100,000 children from impoverished families from Britain to Canada and Australia between 1869 and 1948 as part of the Child Migrant Programme.

It was well-intentioned, but in fact split up families and siblings, and exposed many youngsters to forced labour and physical and sexual abuse.

Many records were falsified to prevent the youngsters getting back in touch with their families.
