A NEW website is aiming to put children back in touch with nature.

Conservation charity the Woodland Trust wants to encourage youngsters in West Yorkshire to get outside and become nature spotters.

Its “nature detectives” website aims to get children outside into their back garden, local woodland and nature spots – and the website has just launched a revolutionary tool called the LAB – a fun way of learning.

The LAB enables kids to create activity sheets they can take outside with them to identify wildlife.

The site also includes a large photo gallery, giving children the chance to add their own images.

Shaun Nixon, from the Trust’s learning team, said: “In the 21st century it is natural that children are more inclined to spend time in front of a computer screen, but the sad fact is that more and more are losing touch with nature.

“The LAB provides a more constructive way for kids to spend time online.

“Best of all it gives them the kick to get outside and explore the real world.”

The Trust is challenging local children to turn detective and let them know about all the nature they spot.
