A GROUP of Grange Moor children have been raising cash to help people in a war-torn area of Sudan.

Freya Harwood-Bond, nine, and friends Olivia Portman, Hannah Sutton and Gemma Hannam are in the same class at Upper Whitley Junior and Infant School.

The girls were worried that the needs of people in Sudan may have been forgotten because of the tsunami disaster in southern Asia on Boxing Day.

Civil war broke out in Darfur, Sudan, 19 months ago and about 50,000 people have died so far.

Millions have fled their homes to escape the violence and are suffering starvation and disease in refugee camps.

The girls held a door-to-door collection around the village in the wind and rain. They then helped to organise a bring-and-buy sale at school.

The girls raised £169.87, which they have given to Oxfam, along with toys and clothes left over from the sale.
