YOUNGSTERS from across Yorkshire will gather in Huddersfield for a mini-Euro 2004 football tournament.

Sports Minister Richard Caborn will present a cup to the winning team.

Pupils from primary schools across the region will compete at Syngenta's sports complex on Leeds Road on Saturday, May 29.

Sixteen sides will battle it out in the five-a-side contest run by Yorkshire Water.

The event supports the company's Cool Schools scheme, which links the drinking of water to health and sport.

The event follows the same format as the forthcoming Euro 2004. Each team of ten and 11-year-olds will represent a nation.

Players will wear replica shirts of one of the participating nations, which they will keep as a memento of the day.

The winners, who will be decided through a series of group games, will be presented with a mains-fed water cooler for their school, along with a replica European Championship Cup.

Mr Caborn, MP for Sheffield Central, is also expected to referee one the games in the later rounds of the tournament.

Kevin Whiteman, Yorkshire Water's managing director, said: "We expect the Cool Schools Euro 2004 tournament to be an exciting and enjoyable event.

"I am sure the teams will play with as much passion and good spirit as will be seen in Portugal in June."

The contest promises to be a fun-filled day out, with qualifying rounds kicking-off at 10am.

A penalty shoot-out will take place during lunch.

The final - in mid-afternoon - will be refereed by Steve Lodge, who officiated at the Chelsea v Middlesbrough FA Cup Final in 1997.

All those competing will receive a tournament medal, with a special presentation being held for the winners, runners-up and winner of the penalty shoot-out.
