MORE than 1,000 young children from up to 35 schools across Calderdale are being equipped with vital skills to keep them safer on the streets and in the home.

Police in Calderdale have teamed up with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Calderdale Primary Care Trust’s Health Improvement Team, Calderdale Road Safety, Metro and the Coastguard to run several advice-packed Safety for Life courses.

The course is open to year six children, aged between 10 and 11, and presents groups of pupils with a series of exciting scenarios that will require quick-thinking, common sense and safety knowledge.

Youngsters are taught about drug awareness, safety on roads, motorcycle nuisance and safety and personal safety as well as hygiene and health issues, safety on buses and safety by the coast.

Calderdale Schools Liaison Officer PC Kevin Tomney said: “We hope our input will make the youngsters think about situations they may find themselves in and also think about how their actions affect other people.”
