BUDDING sports fans are being urged to get involved with the 2012 Olympics.
Wakefield MP Mary Creagh – whose area covers Denby Dale – is calling on all qualifying four-year-olds to get behind the big London event.
All children born in the UK on December 20 in 2004 are being given the chance to register to take part in the Children’s Promise Scheme.
The initiative – launched during the bid to host the 2012 games – will see children participating in an event or ceremony at the Olympics or Paralympics.
They will have until March 31 2009 to register.
Ms Creagh said: “Although London is the host city of the Olympics, the games will benefit the whole of Britain.
“This is a great opportunity for Wakefield’s children to get connected to the 2012 games.
“I am sure that an opportunity such as this will inspire more local people to take up sport which will improve their health and wellbeing.”
She said she was contacting the council’s registrar to help locate eligible local children.
