FILM fans had a truly scrumptious treat when one of cinema’s most famous cars visited Huddersfield.

Families flocked to see the famous ‘flying’ car Chitty Bang Bang, which captured the hearts of people all over the world when it appeared in the 1968 film of the same name.

The car, with its famous Gen 11 number plate, was one of the original cars that appeared in the musical, which starred Dick Van Dyke as Caractacus Potts and Sally Ann Howes as Truly Scrumptious.

It was on show at CALA Homes’ new Hexagon development on Birkby Lodge Road at the weekend.

And people of all ages were delighted to see Chitty, which has been beautifully maintained by its current owner who takes it to venues across the country so that fans can catch a glimpse of the piece of film history.

The much-loved children’s film tells the story of Potts, a wacky inventor, who buys and restores an old car that was a racing champion until it was damaged in an accident.

The red and yellow car first seems like an ordinary sports car, but as the film progresses Potts and his family discover that it has magical qualities, including the ability to sprout wings and fly.

The film, now celebrating its 40th anniversary, was in its day one of the most expensive and elaborate films ever made.

It was later turned into an award-winning stage show, which continues to play to packed houses on tour throughout the UK.

Families visiting the Huddersfield development scrambled to have their pictures taken with one of the world’s most famous and recognisable cars.

Sales advisor Amanda Simpson said: “It was absolutely brilliant to have the car here. It looked fabulous and was in mint condition.

“People love the car and it’s quite a sight to see – it’s the original car so it’s been a chance for them to see a real piece of film history.

“The film is so popular and people of all ages came to see the car, from people without kids who have grown up with the film to the children who love it today.”
