The young woman left permanently scarred after a ‘random’ bottle attack in Netherthong has spoken for the first time of her terrifying ordeal.

Chloe Knapton , 21, was left pouring with blood after her attacker launched a a vodka bottle through her driver’s side window.

The bottle shattered and large pieces became embedded in her neck, with glass shards dangerously positioned around her nose and shoulder.

Doctors told her she was ‘very lucky’ the bottle did not lodge itself closer to her main artery or she may not have survived.

Brave Chloe, a dance teacher, said: “If it had been two centimetres to the right I would have been dead in 40 seconds.

Now Andrew Shires, the man who attacked her as she made her way home, is awaiting sentence after admitting wounding Chloe.

Speaking of the night of the attack she said: “I had been out to Brambles in Holmfirth with my friend and we set off in separate cars to go to her house.

“Her car was first. We were driving on New Road near the bus stop.

“My friend indicated for me to pull in. She said she had seen a bike and was going to go and get it and quickly turned her car around.

“I also turned round and stopped near the bus shelter.

“I could see she was on the grassy bank talking to someone. I couldn’t decide if she knew him or whether he was just kicking off.”

The next thing Chloe saw was a man coming from the stone bus shelter holding a Vodka bottle.

“I was petrified he was going to hit me. He smashed the bottle through the window and I was covered in tiny pieces of glass. I didn’t feel the glass going into me.

“It all happened so fast. I thought it was a plastic bottle in my mind.

“My friend ran round and jumped in my car and just shouted ‘Drive’. She was screaming.

“He then punched the back window which also shattered and I drove off.

“I could hardly see for the blood and my friend had to do the gears and I was just steering.

“We just needed to get away. I thought I had broken a tooth and was spitting out blood.

The pair fled a short distance to the safety of Chloe’s mum’s friend’s house where emergency services and her family were called.

Chloe spent four days in Leeds General Infirmary and was treated by three specialist surgeons.

She added: “I had a piece of glass in my neck. If it had been 2cm to the right it could have killed me.

Chloe’s mum Allyson said of the attack: “It’s just wrong that someone could do this to such a young beautiful girl who is so full of life.

“She is still beautiful but has been told she will be permanently scarred.”

Chloe has been supported throughout her ordeal by her family and hundreds of well wishers, many who brought cards and flowers to her home.

She added: “It’s overwhelming. I’ve had people I’ve not spoken to for years get in touch and offer to help. Everyone has been so supportive.”
