Former Royds Hall school pals are rallying round to support their friend who is dying from cancer.
Chris Chambers, 38, of Golcar was diagnosed with throat and mouth cancer 12 months ago after a routine dentist check-up alerted him to abnormalities.
But despite going straight to his doctors and subsequently having treatment which saw a section of his tongue removed, the cancer has spread.
Now three of his friends – Chris Karolczuk, Elizabeth Anne Bowman and Stephen Shade-Richards – are hosting a Royds Hall Leavers’ reunion to support Chris and his daughter.
His friend, Chris Karolczuk, 38, said: “Me and Chris have known each other since we were 11 and went to Royds Hall together.
“When we found out he had cancer it was a huge shock to everyone and we did what we could to support him.
“He had chemo but the surgeons found tumours in his neck and five months ago he was given the devastating news that the cancer is terminal.
“He has still had radiotherapy but he has lost his eyebrows and has lost nearly half his body weight.
“I saw him last week and he has moved in with his mum. I told him we were going to host a reunion and wanted to raise money for him and his grown-up daughter.
“He was overwhelmed and has since had people get back in touch with him that he had lost contact with.
“We had hoped he would be well enough to come to the reunion for a short time but it looks like that will not be possible.”
Chris added: “Elizabeth has known Chris Chambers since junior school. We just wanted to do something to support him and his family. He is such a great guy.”
“We were going to do it for just our leavers’ year which was 1992 but so many people have come forward to offer they messages and donate we have opened it up to 1990-95 Royds Hall Leavers’ and friends of Chris Chambers.”
The event will be held at The Rock Cafe on Ramsden Street, Huddersfield from 7.30pm tomorrow on Friday night.
