LIVELY Chrissy Hird celebrated her 100th birthday with a card from the Queen.

She was born in Clayton West, on June 30 1908.She was the youngest of seven children of John Henry and Emily Shaw.

Mrs Hird went to Penistone Girls School from 1919 until 1924 and became a weaver once she left school.

She married Albert Hird in 1927. Mr Hird, a former prison officer, died in 1999.

The couple had one son Michael, who lives in California.

Mrs Hird is also close to her niece, Katherine Shaw, who lives in Leeds.

Michael Hird said: “She always has a very positive attitude to life.

“She often said: ‘if you don’t learn something new every day you’ve wasted a day.’ She is very loving and caring.

“She says, with a twinkle in her eye, that she is still looking for a job to keep her busy every day.”

Mrs Hird moved to Elmsdale Residential Home in Skelmanthorpe in 2003 and has lived there ever since.

She was an active member of Clayton West Methodist Church and used to sing in the choir.

She also enjoys singing for pleasure.

Mrs Hird used to enjoy travelling and visiting the Peak District, Lake District and Scotland.
