A COURSE introducing people to Christianity is proving popular in Huddersfield, latest figures show.

More than 20 Alpha classes are now being run by churches in the town giving people the chance to explore their spirituality. The wave of interest follows the national trend which has seen a steep increase in the number of people taking part in the free courses – from 4,600 in 1993 to more than nine million last year.

Now Huddersfield people are being invited to find out more about the sessions at an information evening on Monday.

Reverend Calvert Prentis, of the Holy Trinity Church, Huddersfield, said: “We have been running the Alpha courses in Huddersfield for many years and it has definitely grown in popularity.

“We get a wide range of people who sign up to Alpha, from those who have never been to church to those who are thinking what life is all about and are seeking questions answered.

“We also get those who have been to church for years. It is such a wide scope of people.”

The course, originally devised by a church in London, was launched to help people tap into the Christian beliefs in a bid to halt the decline in church attendances. It is now believed only 7.5% regularly attend church.

The course, which takes place over ten weekly sessions and includes an away day, looks at whether Christianity is true or false and also explores issues surrounding faith and healing.

Churches across Huddersfield are teaming on Monday from 7pm to host a free buffet. The event will take place at the New Union Bar, off New Street. For further information contact Calvert Prentis or Nick Haigh on 07983 818374.
