AS people spruce up their homes for the festive season a charity is reminding them that their old furniture can raise valuable cash.

Oxfam, which provides aid to 90 Third World countries, is asking for donations of good-quality furniture and furnishings.

Staff at its shop on Colne Road, Huddersfield, want more people to give their second-hand goods which can then be sold.

Manager Lisa Morris - pictured with some of the items in the shop - said: "People often buy new furniture at Christmas and they want to know where to send their old goods.

"A bookcase sold for £25 can feed a family for a month in Africa.

"A £45 table can train a midwife and a three-piece suite sold for £200 can train and support a carer for people living with HIV/Aids."

Charity officials stress that only good-quality items can be resold.

The charity, which has had a shop in Colne Road for 20 years, has a collection service whereby large items can be collected each Wednesday.

Goods can also be dropped off at the shop, but staff would appreciate a phone call first.

The shop is open from 9am to 4.15pm, Monday to Saturday.

For donations, it opens between 12.30 and 3pm on Sundays.

Anyone wanting to use the donation service should phone the shop on 01484 431563.
