A man has appeared in court accused of raping an unconscious woman in the doorway of a town centre shop.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the alleged attack happened in broad daylight in Huddersfield on Saturday evening.

Several members of the public called police after witnessing the incident in a doorway on Cross Church Street, the court was told.

Christopher Price, 33, appeared in court for the first time today charged with the offence.

Dressed in a bright green T-shirt and dark trousers, he spoke only to confirm his personal details during his brief court appearance.

Sarah Marsh, prosecuting, said that the incident occurred at 5.30pm.

She told the court that several witnesses saw a man having sex with an unconscious female. The woman was laid in a shop doorway, Miss Marsh told the court.

Flanked in the secure dock by two security officers Price, of Paul Lane in Flockton Moor, was told that his case was too serious to be dealt with by magistrates.

District Judge Michael Hopkinson sent his case to Leeds Crown Court.

He will first appear there on July 11 and was remanded in custody.
