A man who ran into the window of a takeaway as a joke failed to amuse magistrates - who ordered him to pay hundreds of pounds worth of compensation for the smashed glass.

The prank at the Zam Zam Indian in Slaithwaite had already backfired on Christopher Wood as he was left with cuts to his face.

Wood, 27, pleaded guilty to criminal damage when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that the takeaway on Carr Lane was damaged late on November 1.

Wood had been out drinking with friends, prosecutor Andy Wills told magistrates.

He said: “He decided as a prank to run as he fast as he could into the takeaway window.

“He jumped into it, shoulder barging the window and causing it to smash.”

The court heard that Wood, of Hollins Glen in Slaithwaite, originally ran from the scene but was soon located by police.

He received some injuries, including cuts to his face.

Magistrates were told that Wood had been showing off to try and impress his friends.

Amjid Mahmood, mitigating, said: “There was no intention to break the window.

“It was just tomfoolery on his part and he came off worse.”

Magistrates ordered the labourer to pay £600 compensation to fix the damaged window as well as £85 court costs.
