A CHURCH community is making small steps in its fundraising appeal.

New stone flags outside St Francis's Church and community hall in Fixby are the first evidence of improvements.

And now local people and businesses are being asked to dig deeper to help with more urgent repairs.

The church launched an appeal in March after a large crack appeared in the south wall and £15,000 was needed to put it right.

But with re-roofing, insulation, modernised heating system, disabled access and toilet facilities planned as part of the work, the total has now reached £25,000.

The building was opened in 1954 through public subscription and cost £6,000. It has remained largely the same.

Edward Jarratt, a member of the church maintenance committee, said: "We are about halfway with our fundraising target and are very grateful to those local people and businesses who have already helped.

"In order to keep our hall as a vital centre to serve the Fixby and district community we would appeal to anyone able to give us further financial support to do so."

Mr Jarratt said well over 200 people from 11 groups used the hall regularly.

"We appeal to people to join with us to bring back the spirit of enthusiasm that its founders inspired and help us raise the funds to allow the necessary work to be completed."

Anyone who can offer any cash help should write to the church.
