A BATLEY church is resurrecting a famous tradition.

St Mary of the Angels RC Church is to hold its torchlight procession for the first time in five years.

Modelled on the procession at Lourdes, the event used to draw hundreds of people from all over the country.

The tradition at the church was started in the 1950s by the parish priest, Father Gallon, so that parishioners could take part in the public act of worship.

After the Rosary was said at the church, the procession travelled through the town before a short service and blessing in the Market Place.

The tradition stopped when attendance declined, but is now being revived by the Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Rev Arthur Roche, originally from Batley Carr, who used to attend the processions in his youth.
