AN HISTORIC churchyard is in line for another prestigious countryside award.

All Hallows, Kirkburton, has been shortlisted in the Environmental Project of the Year category in the Yorkshire Rural Awards.

The winner will be announced by BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration at a gala dinner in Harrogate on May 14.

The yard was rescued from ruin in 2001 and has since been a tidy haven for birds and bats.

Judges chairman Terry Fletcher said: “The judges were particularly impressed not just by the scale of the work involved and the beneficial effect it had on the area around the church, but also by the way the local community had pulled together to make it happen.”

Even though it has undergone many changes, All Hallows is one of the most complete examples of a 13th century church in West Yorkshire and contains many ancient and interesting features, including the font.
