BUILDING companies in Huddersfield have been urged to provide work experience places for school leavers.

The initiative being run by training body CITB-Construction Skills, aims to give youngsters a taste of careers in the construction industry.

School leavers will get the opportunity to enrol on work experience placements for two to four weeks as part of the new scheme, Experience Construction.

Mick Hamill, regional delivery manager for CITB-Construction-Skills in Yorkshire, said: “ This is a great opportunity for construction companies to put themselves forwards and make a crucial contribution.

“While the sector still faces challenges, it is important that we make sure that quality new entrants continue to enter the workforce to prevent a skills gap in the future.”

CITB-Construction-Skills is looking for firms to support up to 1,000 work placements nationally, to be followed by 500 apprenticeship places.

The work experience placements will take place from February.
