DEBT problems are now the main source of concern for people seeking help at the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB).
Nationwide, CAB advisors handled 2.27m debt problems in 2009 and debt and benefit issues now account for 60% of their workload.
David Kilcoyne from Kirklees CAB said the national picture was being reflected locally as debt inquiries had risen by 12% over the last three years.
He said: “We have had a lot more people with mortgage debt and secured loans from properties. That came with the hike in house prices.
“We have recently appointed a full-time financial trainer to help teach people to budget.”
Kirklees has CAB offices in Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Batley and Heckmondwike and outreach sessions are run in many rural areas.
