CIVIC and religious chiefs in Kirklees have united to condemn terrorists.

They met in Dewsbury last night to attack those behind last week's London bombings and will do the same in Huddersfield tonight.

The condemnation, led by the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Margaret Fearnley, was also echoed by religious leaders.

Faith leaders from the Huddersfield and North Kirklees Interfaith Councils joined with the Mayor of Kirklees and the Council to give their support and thoughts to all the people and their families affected by the distressing and tragic incidents in London.

Clr Fearnley said: "We are united in our shared concern for the people of London following the terrorist bombings on Thursday.

"We assure them of our support and our admiration for the tremendous spirit of the people of London and the emergency services that serve them.

"Our faith communities are supporting them in prayer.

"Members of the faith communities of Kirklees - Ba'hai, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh - are united by a common commitment to peace and rejection of the ways of violence.

"Our religions teach ways of mutual respect and care for the vulnerable."

Naeem Sarfraz, a member of the Markazi Jamia Masjid Ghausia mosque in Lockwood, added his comments.

He said: "Our sincere prayers go to the victims of the London bombings and their families.

"The Muslims of Masjid Ghausia and the wider Mulsim community of Huddersfield condemn, in no uncertain terms, the attack on the people of London.

"We hope these events do not hinder good relations between the different communities within Huddersfield as Muslims have contributed in many positive ways to this region and are proud to be from it."

He added: "Let me then go on to say how angry, sad, appalled, disgusted and outraged I am at the perpetrators of these attacks.

"These sentiments are shared by our entire community in the town."
