MORE than 1m people could each claim back thousands of pounds in council tax after being put in the wrong band, says a consumer campaigner.

Martin Lewis, the founder of, said that due to `ad hoc evaluations' homeowners across the UK could have been overpaying for as long as 14 years.

He is now urging people to check their own house evaluation and see if they are in line for a windfall.

The issue will be the subject of a Tonight with Trevor McDonald special scheduled to be aired on ITV1 tomorrow.

In the programme Mr Lewis will explain how hundreds of people have already reclaimed substantial sums by checking if they were among those who have been placed in the wrong council tax band.

In one case Mike Linsky, a taxi driver from Milton Keynes, challenged his council tax band and got £2,600 back.
