FAMILIES who fought to keep their village green have celebrated their victory with a summer picnic.

Residents from Marsh, Edgerton and Lindley were invited to the get together at Clayton Fields off Halifax Road – and 250 turned up to watch local musicians.

The bands included Repossessed, Obsidian and a young teenage group called Raw Voltage.

There was also folk singer Georgina and Huddersfield musician Nicky Wright along with country and western singer John Badminton.

The picnic was organised by Clayton Fields Action Group secretary Mike Hardy and raised £450 for the group’s continuing battle to save Clayton Fields from the threat of development.

“It was a brilliant day with some great entertainment,’’ he said. “There was a wonderful community spirit.’’

Raffle prizes were donated by businesses and pubs in Marsh along with Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman. The picnic was officially started around 1.30pm by Kirklees Council leader Clr Mehboob Khan and finished at 7pm.
