RUBBISH-strewn Huddersfield streets have been specially selected for a big clean-up.
A Kirklees Council team will be blitzing hundreds of properties in Dalton and Rawthorpe on three action days this month and next.
The campaign aims to stop gardens being used as dumping grounds.
Clr Liz Smaje, the council’s Cabinet member for leisure and neighbourhood services, said: “We want people to take pride in their local area.
“By looking after their properties, and using the services available, residents will help make their neighbourhoods cleaner.”
The first action day, by Kirklees Neighbourhood Management tomorrow, will target 250 householders.
They have been sent leaflets telling them their properties have been picked for the service.
Two more action days are planned for March 15 and 29.
Information packs will be issued before each collection.
They include telephone numbers and advice about how to arrange free collections from the council in future.
Free pick-up services are available for most items.
The council will check the targeted areas a week after the blitz to ensure all rubbish and bulky waste has been taken away.
Residents will be asked what they thought of the scheme.
Dumping rubbish in gardens is an offence under the Environmental Protection Act and can result in fines up to £2,500.
In December the Examiner reported the case of Brian Martin, who was ordered to pay more than £700 for ignoring repeated requests to clear rubbish from outside his home in Wellhouse Lane, Mirfield.
Last month Lorraine Shettle, of Oliver Lane, Marsden, Dennis Johnson, of Nabcroft Lane, Crosland Moor and Robert Sykes and Suzzanne Heaver, of Hawthorne Terrace, Crosland Moor, were all prosecuted by Kirklees Council for the same reason.
They were hit with fines and costs totalling more than £4,500.
