A CLIMBER from Huddersfield broke his back in a 20ft fall while leading a group in the Peak District.

The 30-year-old man, who has not been named, fractured a vertebrae in the fall near Standedge Edge, a few miles south of the A57 Snake Road in Derbyshire.

The accident happened at around 2pm on September 17.

He was airlifted to hospital in Sheffield, after volunteers from Edale Mountain Rescue Team had been called out to help. The rescuers tended to the injured climber and prepared him for the airlift.

The climber avoided serious head injuries by wearing a helmet, rescuers said.
