A TORY councillor has again attacked plans to close two local housing offices.

Clr David Hall (Liversedge and Gomersal) today hit out at Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, which manages council housing, over plans to shut the Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton offices.

He had raised the matter earlier, at Kirklees Council's meeting last week.

He said today that the closures would mean tenants in the Spen Valley would have to travel to Dewsbury or Batley for help and advice.

At the meeting, Clr Hall challenged Clr Andrew Cooper, the Kirklees Cabinet member responsible for housing, to contact Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing, to ensure at least one of the offices was saved.

But Clr Cooper refused the request.

He blamed the problem on fewer council houses, fewer tenants and less rental income.

Now, Clr Hall says: "We are all concerned there may be problems in funding both offices and staffing them.

"Clr Cooper replied to my questioning with a couple of indifferent shrugs, saying it was not up to him and: `What can you do?'

"I can assure tenants that I and my ward colleagues, Clrs Derrick Yates and Margaret Bates, will fight to ensure at least one office remains open."
