A PLEA for help in solving a mystery involving two old photographs has turned up some clues.

Carrie Dandy, marketing officer with Kirklees Council's culture and leisure services, made a plea for help after finding the two pictures in old files.

One photograph was of an elephant standing outside a public building. The other showed a wedding group in Mirfield, dated 1888.

Carrie said: "The response to the appeal has been excellent.

"I have had more than a dozen phone calls."

The elephant photograph was taken on the steps of Dewsbury Town Hall in 1987.

The elephant was there for the opening of an exhibition and bazaar by North Kirklees Race Relations and Enterprise Batley/Dewsbury.

Garage owners Dewsbury Motor Company agreed to sponsor the event by paying for the hire of an elephant.

Carrie said: "I was contacted by a Mrs Kirby whose daughter, Tracey Jane Kirby, was the first ever Miss Enterprise and was asked to ride the elephant from Dewsbury bus station to the Town Hall.

"Miss Kirby's strongest memory is of being terrified that she might fall off."

But the other picture mystery has proved harder to crack.

"I didn't get many calls on this one," said Carrie.

"But the most interesting was from a gentleman who thinks that the people in the photo are all men - even the bride - belonging to a drama group from the Field House Chapel in Mirfield.

"As yet, we've been unable to track down any further information."

Carrie added: "The whole exercise has been an interesting one and I'm very grateful to all those people who took the time to call in."
