A coach caught fire on the M62 causing long tailbacks this morning.

Around 40 people were on the vehicle when smoke started to pour from the engine as it headed towards Manchester on the westbound carriageway close to junction 22 at Ripponden just after 11.30am.

The driver managed to pull over and all the passengers got off and went onto nearby moorland.

Fire engines were sent from Huddersfield, Rastrick and two from Greater Manchester – and the first to arrive was Rastrick.

A spokesman said: “We used two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and one hosereel to deal with the fire which was confined to the engine. We think the fault could be with the turbocharger.

“There were both children and adults on the bus which had set off from Leeds and all were around 200 yards onto the moorland, well away from the coach.”

The drama caused traffic queues stretching back to junction 23 at Outlane.

Another vehicle was quickly organised by the coach company to pick up the stranded passengers.
